Bert and Ernie Depicted as Alcoholic Gay Lovers in Family Guy!

More Family Guy with Sesame Street characters coming up in this next entry covering all of the instances that I can remember seeing of the show talking smack about our favorite characters from the PBS show that many of us watched while we were growing up. I know that Family Guy will already flashback to famous Sesame Street montages from time to time, like the numbers game, the learning animations and so forth. However, the main purpose of these entries is to cover the instances where they take specific and well known Sesame Street characters and really make fun of them.

This time around it’s none other than Bert and Ernie. The always together dynamic duo from the Sesame Street that were frequently used to help teach kids about sharing and learning in a family friendly TV show—and if you don’t recall or know about them here is the scoop. Bert was a taller, yellow puppet that had a short temper and would frequently get irate with his partner, Ernie. On the other hand, Ernie was a shorter, stouter puppet that emphasized a more laid back personality and always tried to calm Bert down.

Both of the puppets were most frequently see together on the show. This led to later, mid-90s rumors that they were gay lovers—especially after the show the Telletubbies announced that one of their characters was gay. And people had always thought that Elmo was the gay character, but Seth McFarlane clearly devoted this notion to Bert and Ernie. Personally, even as a child I had always wondered why these two puppets were so close, and had pondered whether or not they were life partners; yes I was a weird little boy.

In the clip below, which is one of my favorite Family Guy, Sesame Street clips, it depicts Bert and Ernie as gay lovers. They wake up in a bed together, with no clothing on, when the phone rings. Bert is a detective who has a bottle of whiskey in his hand; clearly an alcoholic. When he needs to get dressed during the middle of the night and go out and investigate a crime scene, he and Ernie get into a fight over drinking, yelling and crumbs being left in the bed! If you love Family Guy, and you know all about Sesame Street, this clip is timeless classic.
