Amnesia: Family Guy Goes There

The most recent Family Guy episode "Big Man On Hippocampus" (season 8 episode 10 original air date 1/03/10) explores territory that even I never thought it would stoop to: Peter gets hit on the head, and comes down with a nasty case of amnesia.  Really!  

If it's wrong to nitpick the medical inaccuracies of Family Guy, then I don't want to be right.

Peter appears to have lost everything out of his head (I mean, what little was in there in the first place).  At one point, Lois has to tell him what a knife is.  (Thus leading us into a Crocodile Dundee joke which was both inevitable and staler than the half a tube of Saltine crackers sitting in the back of my cupboard right now.  But to give the writers credit, they half pulled that gag out of its nose dive with Peter's musing "I want to see that guy everywhere, and then never again.")

Is Brian a Genius--or an Idiot?

Brian has always been one of my favorite Family Guy characters. I’m not much of a dog person, but if I had a dog I would probably want him to be a martini-drinking liberal who walks on two legs.

Yesterday, while we were out bowling, I saw the most extraordinary thing: Bruce in real life!

If you’ve read my post on Bruce from Family Guy, you know he’s my all-time favorite character. He’s the funny little “token gay guy” on the show who always says, “Hey, y’all” in a drawl that never ceases to make me laugh.

So I saw a guy who looked and acted just like Bruce. He had the same haircut, the same facial hair, the same drawl, and even some of the same mannerisms. The only thing he was missing was the earring—but for all I know, he may have simply left it at home.

With each new Family Guy episode, we think we know a little bit more about the diabolical psyche that makes up Stewie Griffin’s mind. The plots, the deception, the maniacal grinning and blasé dips with death… and then all of the sudden—whoa! We get a curveball. Give Meg a Break, Already

I’ve never understood why Meg is the Griffin family scapegoat. It never fails that when a new Family Guy episode airs, there’s some line about how fat, ugly, stupid or generally awful Meg is. People have set themselves on fire after looking at her, the popular kids at school hate her, and her own boyfriend ran out on her after seeing her naked. What is the deal?

During the first few seasons, Meg was treated like a normal member of the family, which I think is rightly so; just add a little makeup, boobs and change her hair color and you’ve basically got a mini-Lois, right? Meg has no openly ugly characteristics; compared to the rest of the town, she looks pretty normal, if not pretty, period. So why the hate fest?

Best Stewie Plots Ever

When I was a kid, I loved Animaniacs. Did you? I couldn’t wait to see what kind of scheme Pinky and the Brain would come up with to take over the world. I especially loved it when Brain would ask, “Pinky, are you pondering what I’m pondering?” And Pinky would say something idiotic like, “I think so Brain, but where are we going to get that much jelly?” Though their plots never worked, they never stopped trying to ensnare the global population in some maniacal plot.

Today we have someone much better than Pinky and the Brain. He’s more evil, he’s more cunning, and his plans—though often about global domination—are typically centered around offing his own mother. We have Stewie Griffin.

Family Guy Celebrity Voices

Family Guy already has a stellar cast when it comes to voice talent. Seth McFarlane, the writer of American Dad, Dexter’s Laboratory and Family Guy itself, does voices for Brian, Peter and Stewie and many other characters. Lois is voiced by Alex Borstein from Mad TV, Chris by Seth Green, and Meg is voiced by Mila Kunis of That 70’s Show. My absolute favorite celebrity who’s a regular—besides Drew Barrymore, who is Brian’s hilariously ditzy girlfriend Jillian—is Adam West, who plays the idiot mayor with the same name.

10 Reasons to Love Lois

One of my favorite things about Family Guy (besides the goofy pop culture references, “the time I…” flashbacks, and whatever zany thing Bruce is going to say next) is the family matriarch, Lois. I know most people have a soft spot for Stewie—and yes, the tot’s got a lot to be admired—and Brian is also pretty awesome, but there’s just something about a woman who can put up with a family as dysfunctional as hers and still manage to pull it all together (most of the time).

Oh, wait. That’s all mothers, isn’t it?

Still, Lois is one awesome mom, and here are 10 reasons to love her.
