Bruce, the Token Gay Guy
We all know that Stewie, despite his mini-affairs with characters like Oliva, is definitely the prime gay character of Family Guy. But no matter how many man-loving comments our favorite diabolical toddler utters on any given episode, the character who comes to mind when we think “homosexual” on the show is none other than Bruce.
Bruce is one of my absolutely favorite characters. With his moustache, earring and trademark blue sweater topped with a brown vest, we all know that when Bruce is on screen something really funny is about to happen.
And who has as many jobs as Bruce? Officially a “performance artist,” he’s worked as a CPR instructor, a horror novelty shop clerk, an “exotic entertainment” worker and a school board member, and a psychic medium, among other things. (I LOVE that they have him as a school board member—too bad they don’t do that on more “conventional” shows, too.)
The school board episode, or No Chris Left Behind, is probably my favorite Bruce episode. When he’s addressed to speak first at the school board meeting, he says hello and, “We goin' have a puppet show, we goin' have some jazz. No, I'm just kiddin’. We have some business to take care of. I'm sorry I pulled ya'lls legs. I'm just a little excited cause I met somebody today!” It’s one of his funniest moments ever.
Of course, the time he was a slave being whipped in the episode Untitled Griffin Family History was pretty outrageous too. When asked his name, he drawls, “Tobi, with an accent over the i, and a line over the o, so they know it's a long o."
Then there was the time Bruce was in the 10 items or less lane at the store and Stewie told him to hurry up in the episode Brian Sings and Swings. Bruce was hilarious trying to decide what to put back when he realized he had eleven items, finally deciding on putting his V8 juice back because “I can just get some tomato juice at the mini-mart down the street.”
Every time there’s a new Family Guy episode on, I always hope that there will be a “Bruce moment.” I just crack up every time I hear “Hey y’all” or “I knoooow!”—not to mention every time they use his voice for other characters, like the creature from Alien or the bumblebee.
What’s your favorite Bruce moment?
