I would say that approximately 92% of what I like about this episode is the way it proves Quagmire right: Brian is a real jerk.
Brian's relationship with Jillian was a wonderful, multi-episode mini-arc in the show. This episode, in which Brian decided to man up and move in with Jillian, took the relationship a lot farther than I thought they would. And I was particularly surprised when the ending of the show, like, "took." As in, things weren't just back to normal afterward. It has to be one of the few examples where an episode actually had a lasting impact on the show's world.
Anyway! In the B Plot, Meg gets a job at the Quahog Mini Mart (memorably staffed by H. Jon Benjamin). Meg's role is overtaken by Chris, who buddies up to Carl in a way that Meg cannot.
This is actually an interesting illustration of a scenario which plays out over and over again in the real working world, where women often fail to be promoted or awarded raises because they don't have a cultural connection with their supervisors. Because men are able to bond with each other over (for example) discussing which of Jennifer Connelly's movies contain nude scenes, women (regardless of their job performance) get passed over.
This is the modern version of the "Old Boy's Network." And I appreciate Family Guy for taking Meg's side, and pointing out how unfair it is.
But then we also have the infamous mock promo at the bottom of the screen, in which Quagmire rapes Marge Simpson, but she likes it, and then Quagmire ends up shooting the entire Simpsons family. Honestly, it makes me nauseous to see it. (Apparently the Simpsons people weren't too happy with it, either. This gag has apparently been removed from network broadcasts because of the controversy, although they leave it in for Adult Swim airings.)
So… kind of a wash, I guess?
This is also the episode with the wonderful scene where we learn the title of Brian's novel (Faster Than The Speed of Love). And Lois' reaction when Brian tells her the plot ("That's the movie Iron Eagle!") is absolutely priceless.
And at the end, I always find it touching when Jillian finally stands up for herself and refuses to let Brian walk all over her. It was a nice good bye for a character whose whole entire shtick was that we made fun of her for being so stupid.
