S1E6, "The Son Also Draws"

In a cold open, Stewie gets up in the middle of the night to look for a snack. Unable to find anything tasty in the fridge, he bursts into Lois and Peter's room at "a very awkward moment." Stewie spends the rest of the episode grappling with what he's seen. (Although one imagines it's nothing compared to the time he nursed on Peter.)

Meanwhile, Chris is struggling with his participation in Scouts. He would prefer to draw (although I don't see why you can't draw AND be in Scouts, but whatever). Peter ignores all of Chris' awkward attempts to communicate his lack of interest in Scouts.

(Chris goes to Meg for advice on this matter. This is certainly the first time anyone asks Meg for advice, and as far as I can remember, it's also the last.)

The issue comes to a head when Peter builds a soapbox racer for the Scouts' derby. Chris isn't paying attention at the starting line, and ends up jumping the gun - and dragging his Scout leader down the hill. Long story short, Peter decides the whole family should drive to New York to plead Chris' case with the Scout leaders there.

Brian decides to stay at home, but ends up watching a weekend-long "One Day at a Time" marathon.

Family Guy always pulls a wonderful rabbit out of its hat during road trip scenes. (My favorite being the entire family singing "The Rose.") This time Peter wins a game of 20 Questions by identifying the movie Lois is thinking of.

"Is it a GOOD movie?"
"Well, it has its moments."
"Cool Runnings!"

Unfortunately, Peter made the bad decision to drink a prune smoothie before the drive, and soon finds himself at risk of being caught short. He pulls in at an Indian casino to use the bathroom. While he relieves himself, Lois decides to play a few rounds of video poker.
Inevitably, Lois manages to gamble away the family car in the few minutes Peter is gone.

Peter concocts a scheme to pretend to be a member of the tribe, who is then due a percentage of the casino's profits. They send him off on a wild goose chase, a vision quest without food or water. Chris asks to come along, hoping to have a chance to tell Peter that he doesn't want to be in scouts.

After going several hours without snacks, Peter hallucinates the trees talking, and sees the Fonz in the sky, who identifies himself as Peter's spiritual guide. Fonzie instructs Peter to pay attention to what Chris is trying to tell him.

Incidentally, this is the scene where I noticed that Chris sported an earring during the first season. Kinda hideous, innit?

The end features a mock-racially-insulting "The More You Know" riff, which ends on a real insult to Canadians. (South Park did it!)

  • "You know the tub where you take your little baths? They've done it there, too."
  • "Waitaminute, your ass just sneezed! And horses can't talk! No no no, nothing about this adds up at all!"
  • "Perhaps I can't bake a ham, but what I can cook up is a little grace and civility at the table." "Patty, did you know that your mother is a whore?"
  • "I've been to New York. It's like Prague, sans the whimsy."
  • "Oh my god, Brian! There's a message in my Alpha-Bits! It says "Ooooooo"!" "Peter, those are Cheerios."
