She's got a Monkey Scrotum?

Recently a friend of mine told me about a dinner he had with his family.  When he had gotten about halfway into the story, I saw where he was headed.

Apparently his mother and his uncle were talking about a person they both knew.  “Did you know she has M.S.?”, one asked the other.

My friend could not help himself and blurted out “She has a monkey scrotum?!”

Quoting Peter Griffin when your extended family has gathered for a Sunday afternoon meal is probably not a good idea.  Choosing what may be one of Peter’s more offensive quotes should definitely never be done.

Low and behold, this past weekend my wife and I were talking about the same woman.  My wife asked me the same question; “Did you know that she has M.S.?”

I thought about it.  I hesitated.  I knew it to be in bad taste and that it would make me look like an idiot.

Honest to God, I tried.  I really did.  Oh well.

“She has a monkey scrotum?!”

My wife looked at me with shock and disgust.  Luckily we were alone, so I did not embarrass her. However, even if we were in front of others, I probably still would have said it.

This is where Family Guy confuses me.  I find the aforementioned quote offensive.  I imagine that many people do.  Yet when I first saw Peter say “monkey scrotum”, I laughed.  When I saw it for a second time, I laughed again.  In fact, just thinking about it makes me laugh.

I enjoyed my friend’s story and I wish I had been there to see his family’s reaction.  In fact, a smile comes to my face as I think of my wife’s reaction to the monkey scrotum comment.

But is this really what the comedy of our generation has come to?  Humor that should be taken offensively is instead enjoyed.  So much so by my friend and myself that neither of us could pass up the opportunity to share it with our loved ones.

I have compassion for those who are stricken with any difficulty.  Multiple Sclerosis has certainly added unimaginable hardships to the lives of countless people.  As I think about that, I am realizing that the humor that I find in the quote has nothing to do with M.S.

Perhaps it is the combination of the words “monkey” and “scrotum”.  Monkeys are absolutely humorous, always getting into shenanigans and whatnot.  Pair that word with ”scrotum” and you’ve got a winning combination.
